Projects
Prior to becoming a nonprofit organization, the Friends of Shirati committee under Eastern Mennonite Mission raised $32,000 a year for medicines and medical supplies, sent 2 ultrasound machines and 1 autoclave, and provided other financial assistance to Shirati Hospital.
Since becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2005, Friends of Shirati has continued to provide the $32,000 per year for medicines and medical supplies, has provided a 60 KVA standby generator, and 3 large operating room lights. We are also providing $500 a year to pay for the hospital bills for children whose parents are unable to afford the full medical costs.
Projects under consideration are the completion of the men's dormitory at the Bukiroba Theological College, medical books and office equipment for the Shirati Nursing School, a new K-12 school in Dar es Salaam, water systems by way of wells or more efficient water pumps, and the possibility of libraries for the Shirati Nursing School and/or the Bukiroba Theological College. We are also interested in projects that will help to reduce the burden of malaria, HIV/AIDS, and other infectious diseases afflicting the Shirati region.
